Sections, pages, and blocks

The three-level structure

An assessment is a hierarchy: sections at the top, pages inside each section, and blocks inside each page. Sections group related work, such as a skill area, and carry the weights used in scoring. Pages control what a candidate sees on one screen at a time. Blocks are the individual pieces of content on a page, including your questions.

You manage this structure from the Sections & items panel in the builder. The section outline in the left sidebar keeps the full hierarchy in view as you work, so you always know which section and page a block belongs to while you edit.

Working with pages

Within a section, pages can be renamed, reordered, and deleted. Renaming helps candidates and reviewers orient themselves; reordering sets the sequence candidates move through. Deleting a page removes its blocks with it, so check the page's contents before removing it.

All of these structural edits work on both draft and live assessments. Candidates who already submitted keep their exact results, because their scores come from what they answered. Once an assessment is closed or archived, its structure locks; duplicate it to a new draft to make changes.

Adding and reordering blocks

Each page has three ways to add blocks: "+ Add item" opens a question picker, "+ Add content" composes an unscored content block such as a case brief or media, and "Import from library" brings in existing items through a modal with folder, tag, and type filters, search, multi-select, and a "Select all shown" option. Bulk add preserves your selection order and accepts up to 100 items at once; items already in the assessment show an "In assessment" badge.

Once blocks are on a page, reorder them with the up and down controls next to each block. The order you set here is the order candidates see by default, unless you enable block-level shuffle, in which case each attempt gets its own seeded arrangement.

Shuffle at three levels

Shuffle is configured in one place: the Randomization options in the builder's Test settings panel. It is available at three levels, and you can enable any combination — for example, fixing the section order but randomizing the questions inside each page.

• Section order: randomize the order of sections across the assessment.
• Page order: randomize page order within every section.
• Question & content order: randomize block order within every page.

What "seeded per attempt" means

Shuffle is seeded per attempt. Each candidate's attempt gets its own fixed random order: if the candidate refreshes the browser or leaves and returns, they see exactly the same order as before. Different candidates, however, see different orders. This gives you the anti-sharing benefit of randomization without the confusion of questions moving around mid-attempt.
